Business Strategy

PostNL’s strategy is balanced and designed to deliver promising dividend and growth.

The strategy focuses on

  • maintaining the profitability of our letter mail business in the Netherlands
  • growing our parcels business
  • creating profitable growth in our international business

Our services and solutions portfolio not only supports the strategic focus areas but also generates additional growth. For example e-commerce services are part of this portfolio. Our e-commerce services range from marketing (on or offline) services to customer delivery services and from retail services to web shop services. E-commerce services also include fulfilment and payment services. All these services are offered not only on a stand alone basis but also as part of an integrated solution for e-tailers.

In addition we aim to further maximise potential commercial and operational synergies.

We are actively exploring new directions and opportunities in partnerships, retail and e-tail and potential spin-off business.

Mail

In our home market, the emphasis is on ensuring continued profitability of our letter mail business. To achieve this objective in a declining market that has been fully liberalised we will introduce a more flexible business model based on a delivery week with peak-day versus off-peak volumes. Additional process optimisation will be realised by combining and further centralising sorting and other pre-delivery actions.

Parcels

In parcels, the immediate priority is to maintain our market share in the rapidly growing business-to-consumer (B2C) standard parcels market, while strengthening our position in the business-to-business (B2B) market, as well as in adjacent markets. In the B2C market we intend to achieve this by offering value-added solutions such as secure delivery, two- man delivery, payment on delivery service and fulfilment services. In addition, we aim to further develop the shop logistics model to capture synergies in the B2C, B2B and consolidated parcels shipment markets. Growth in these areas will be supported by a new logistics structure and our existing state-of-the-art IT infrastructure.

International

PostNL’s international mail activities are concentrated in the three European markets where liberalisation is most advanced: the UK, Germany and Italy. Here, we are looking to build on our position of leading challenger to the established national carriers. For instance by developing parcel consolidation models and joint procurement activities, and by pursuing other opportunities, such as final mile delivery in the U.K.
