Mail

PostNL is Europe’s leading postal operator. It is the first national mail company to go public, and has a strong position in the fully liberalised Dutch postal market, with the highest next-day delivery volume – over 96% to be more precise – and one of the lowest rates for standard letters. In 2010, PostNL delivered 4.1 billion mail items in the Netherlands and an additional 4.6 billion in the UK, Germany and Italy.

With an eye on the decreasing mail volumes, PostNL is working on a sweeping overhaul of the mail network, which will be rolled out this year and in 2012. The sorting and preliminary activities will be concentrated at a limited number of sites and mail delivery preparation will be automated to a larger degree. Unlike traditional postmen and women, mail deliverers will receive their mail fully sorted.

As part of the transformation, a peak-day model for mail deliveries will be introduced. Accordingly, non-urgent business mail will be delivered on three peak days a week. With these changes in place, the mail network will be ready for the future.
